Climate change is increasing the frequency, intensity and magnitude of hazards, impacting vulnerability of human communities andÌýchangingÌýexposure patterns.ÌýEnvironmental degradation contributes to growing disaster risk, and threatens to exceed the humanitarian sector’s capacity to respond in the coming decades.ÌýNature-based solutions can help communities prepare for, cope with, and recover from disasters.

Disasters

The term natural hazards refer to events such as cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis – events that occur in the physical environment and can potentially cause harm to people and property. A disaster is howeverÌýdefined slightly differently by theÌýUnited Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR):

A serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources

Natural approaches to reduce risks

The ability of people to cope with disasters and adapt to climate change is inextricably linked to their access to basic human rights and to the health of the ecosystems on which they depend for their livelihoods and well-being. The ongoing and future impacts of climate change and disasters on communities must not be seen in isolation, but rather addressed through comprehensive landscape-scale approaches and integrated into broader development and conservation paradigms.

Ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR) and ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) are related approaches that can be thought of as a continuum, from mitigating large-scale disasters, such as tsunamis and landslides, to adapting to different climatic conditions.

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼×ÊÁÏ has been involved in many projects to reduce risk and enhance resilience in the past decade. As of February 2022, °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼×ÊÁÏ's portfolio includes 94 projects across 48 countries encompassing USD 216 million in funding.

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼×ÊÁÏ works to build partnerships and collaboration across the development and humanitarian sectors for the design and implementation of durable, sustainable and cost-effective Eco-DRR interventions. °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼×ÊÁÏ is also working for the recognition and incorporation of Nature across policy processes linked to disaster and climate resilience.
